Annual meeting of the San Diego Chapter of the SfN was held on April 23, 2009 at the Leichtag Auditorium, UC, San Diego
Sponsored by a Chapter grant from the National Society for Neuroscience
Participants came from UC, San Diego, USD, SDSU, The Scripps Research Institute, The Salk Institute, Autism Speaks, Cephalon, Cypress Bioscience, Johnson & Johnson PRD, La Jolla Institute for Research, Perception Dynamics Institute and La Jolla Country Day High School. Dr. Mark Tuszynski (UCSD) spoke about the role of growth factors as treatments for combating Alzheimer's disease. Dr. Terry Sejnowski (Salk), reported on the phenomenon of ectopic release. Dr. Jonathan Shelton (Johnson & Johnson PRD) discussed the fight against insomnia from a pharmaceutical perspective. Poster winners were Margaret Timmers, graduate student,UCSD and Brian Head, Research Scientist, UCSD/VA. This event was Sponsored by the Neuroscience Department, UCSD and the SfN.

Second Annual meeting of the San Diego Chapter of the SfN was held on May 14, 2010 at The Salk Institute for Biological Studies, Frederic de Hoffmann Auditorium and Foyer
The meeting featured scientific presentations by Drs. Bill Mobley (UCSD Med School) and Holly Cline (TSRI) and a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Stephen Heinemann (The Salk Institute for Biological Studies) that incorporated a number of themes but focused on the importance of integrating novel technologies to ultimately understand brain function. The Panel consisted of Drs. Jerold Chun (TSRI), Martyn Goulding (The Salk), George Koob (TSRI), Rich Krauzlis (The Salk), Bill Mobley (UCSD), and Chuck Stevens (The Salk). Dr. Mobley discussed his research on the transportation of endosomes carrying quantum dot labeled NGF cargo in axons and the compromise of transport by amyloid precursor protein. Dr. Cline presented her real time studies on the dependence of dendritic morphology in the superior colliculus of Xenopus tadpoles on visual experience. The Panel Discussion focused on the integration of molecular techniques into systems and cognitive neuroscience. It was widely acknowledged that significant breakthroughs in Neuroscience required the infusion of novel technical approaches and an increase in funding for the development of innovative techniques. About 100 registrants from The Salk Institute, The Scripps Research Institute, UC San Diego, Burnham, San Diego State University, CSU San Marcos, San Diego Mesa College, INSERM, La Jolla Country Day High School, Autism Speaks, Johnson & Johnson PRD, Helicon Therapeutics, Medincell Corp, Advanced Brain Monitoring Inc., Eton Therapeutics, Dart Neuroscience LLC, and general community participated. Dr. Adrienne Dubin (TSRI) presented the chapter events held over the past 2 years and described the opportunities available for future participation, calling for volunteers and sponsors. Poster winners were Jenna Tabor-Godwin, graduate student, SDSU (The role of autophagy during coxsackievirus infection in neuronal stem cells) and Dr. Gary Patti, Postdoctoral Fellow, TSRI (Therapeutic metabolomics investigation of neuropathic pain). Runners up were Dr. Francesca Cattaneo (TSRI) and Steve Sutton (J&J PRD). This event was sponsored by The Salk Institute for Biological Studies and the SfN. Sponsored by a Chapter grant from the National Society for Neuroscience

January 31, 2009: San Diego Brain Bee 2009
Sponsored by The Neurosciences Institute, Invitrogen, Jean and Mike Collins, San Diego Chapter of the SfN, and the Temporal Dynamics of Learning Center at UCSD
The event engaged students interested in the brain in a friendly, one-day competition including a lunch with top scientists from local research institutes. The contest was held on Saturday, January 31st from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 pm at The Neurosciences Institute Auditorium in La Jolla. First place winner was Prabhav Jain and he competed in the National competition. First runner up was Nali Gillespie. Congratulations to all. http://www.lajollalight.com/news/253385-students-show-off-their-mental-skills-at-brain-bee

March 4, 2009: Annual Patrick Henry High School Engineering Academy Career Exploration Fair.
The exhibition by the Chapter presented information on a variety of topics including alcoholism and dependency, Concussion, and Chronic Pain. Students were engaged in hands on demonstrations of two point somatosensory discrimination and the role of olfaction in taste.

January 30, 2010: San Diego Brain Bee 2010
Sponsored by The Neurosciences Institute, Life Technologies, The Thomas C. Ackerman Foundation, San Diego Chapter of the SfN, and the Temporal Dynamics of Learning Center at UCSD
The contest was held at The Neurosciences Institute Auditorium in La Jolla. Dr. Nicholas Spitzer (UCSD) was the master of ceremonies. Drs. Andrea Chiba (Professor, UCSD), Hollis (Holly) Cline (Professor, TSRI), and Peter Welch (Director of R&D, Life Technologies) judged the student’s answers. First place winner was Mr. Omar Shahrior (12th grade, Audeo Charter School) and he competed in the National competition (4th place). January 29, 2011: San Diego Brain Bee 2011
Sponsored by Life Technologies, The Thomas C. Ackerman Foundation, The Neurosciences Institute, the Dorris Neurosciences Center, and the San Diego Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience
The contest was held at at The Neurosciences Institute in La Jolla, CA. Thirty-six students from 17 schools competed in a half day event involving a written and live Q&A competition that tests students knowledge of brain function and dysfunction, physiology and chemistry. The students were challenged with questions derived from Brain Facts, a text developed by the Society for Neuroscience and the Dana Foundation. All students answered randomly picked questions from easy, medium and hard categories during the First Round and the top 10 finalists engaged in triple elimination. Nick Spitzer (Distinguished Professor and Vice Chair Section of Neurobiology, UCSD) was the master of ceremonies; Drs. Cline (TSRI), Walcott (The Neurosciences Institute) and Banaszewska (Life Technologies) were judges. The highlight was the thrilling prolonged battle between Abby Stuart (11th grade Cathedral Catholic High) and Vaishnavi Rao (10th grade Canyon Crest Academy). Abby took home a trophy, a $500 Amazon.com gift certificate, and will receive round-trip airfare and accommodations for two to the National competition. Vaishnavi Rao (1st runner up) received a $250 Amazon.com gift certificate. The next three finishers received $100 Amazon.com gift certificates and were Marci Rosenberg, Priyanka Bisarya, and Praneet Mylavarapu, all from Torrey Pines High School. All participants received t-shirts, a take-away bag of goodies, and a certificate of participation. They competed in front of an audience of parents, siblings, teachers, and neuroscientists. At the close of the final round, an informal mixer was held that gave the sutedents the opportunity to mingle with local research scientists, graduate students and postdoctoral researchers. Congratulations to all. www.sandiegobrainbee.com
