While most scientists will be called upon to teach at some point in their careers, most graduate students and postdoctoral fellows at research institutes receive no training in pedagogy, the science behind education. Our first two sessions focused on active learning styles and techniques, and practical ways to implement them in a classroom.  In the third session of Effective Teaching in the Sciences, participants will learn the tools and strategies of formative assessment to gauge the learning of their students, as well as how to measure their own teaching effectiveness.

Classroom B159
1:00pm – 3:00pm

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Understand methods of forming quizzes, tests, and mid-term/final examinations
  • Describe the components of a grading rubric and how to design them
  • Establish grading policies
  • Establish attainable learning goals and objectives
  • Understand how to add accountability and value to lessons and how to assess each
  • Meet teaching assessment goals and objectives established by stakeholders
