Obtaining the Correct Visa Status for Research at TSRI

The process to obtain the appropriate visa classification for your research at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) begins in the TSRI lab.

Eligibility for a particular visa classification is determined by federal regulations. No person(s) at TSRI is legally authorized to promise, offer, or sign for a visa of any type except the International Services Office staff.

If you will enter the U.S. or transfer (from another U.S. institution) to TSRI as:

B-1 or WB

Request an invitation letter from your TSRI Principal Investigator (PI). This letter MUST be displayed to the port of entry officer upon entry to the U.S. You must specifically request the visa status of B-1 or WB.

NOTE: If granted the visa status of B-2 or WT at the port of entry you cannot participate in the collaborative activities at TSRI. A B-2 visa or WT status is NEVER appropriate for ANY foreign scientist carrying out research activities at TSRI for any period of time under any circumstances. An individual coming to TSRI for an interview, who was admitted to the U.S. in B-2 or WT status, CANNOT be reimbursed for travel or per diem expenses.

F-1 OPT (graduate students only)

Obtain F-1 Optional Practical Training work authorization approval on your I-20 and receive an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) from USCIS prior to starting employment at TSRI. Online forms initiated by the lab must also be completed. Your TSRI lab will request a change of non-immigrant status on your behalf before the EAD expiration date if they plan to continue your employment.

Obtain J-1 Academic Training and a letter authorizing employment from the international office at your current institution prior to commencing employment at TSRI.
