International scholars seeking to enter or re-enter the U.S. must have a valid passport, a valid visa stamp in their passport and an eligibility document such as a DS-2019 or I-20 form. Visa stamps are obtained from U.S. consulates abroad. Canadian citizens do not need a visa to enter the U.S., but they must have a valid passport, an eligibility document and proof of funding.
There are exceptions for travel to Canada, Mexico or certain adjacent islands for less than 30 days. Please see Automatic Revalidation for more information.
Before traveling outside the U.S. you are encouraged to make an appointment to meet with an advisor if you have any questions or concerns regarding re-entry as well as to complete the travel letter request at least two weeks before your trip.
