Non-Immigrants

An alien who seeks temporary entry to the United States for a specific purpose. The alien must have a permanent residence abroad (for most classes of admission) and qualify for the non- immigrant classification sought. Classes of non-immigrants most common at Scripps:

Visa Description Documents Required
B-1 Invited visitors to lab; no salary; reimbursement of reasonable expenses allowed; visits usually no more than 6 months; 1 year maximum stay; must apply for B visa at U.S. consulate. Invitation letter from TSRI faculty hosting visitor
WB Invited visitors are citizens of Visa Waiver Program Countries; no visa application necessary; no salary; reimbursements only; 90 day maximum stay with no possibility to extend or change status; WB status applied for at port of entry. Invitation letter from TSRI faculty hosting visitor

F-1 OPT*

These are international students attending, or are recent graduates of, a U.S. university with authorization for employment in their area of study.

AT*
These are international students attending, or, are recent graduates of a U.S. university with authorization for 18 months full-time employment in their area of study.  Postdocs can have another 18 months of employment authorization for a 3 year maximum period.

TSRI

J-1

Usually TSRI sponsored Research Associate (postdocs) in the ‘Research Scholar’ category - 5 year maximum stay. Some may be in the ‘Short Term Scholar’ category with 6 month maximum stay, no possibility to extend. Passport, I-94, DS-2019

Non-TSRI

J-1
These are researchers in the U.S. on someone else’s J-1 program who may have “incidental” employment at TSRI. Passport,
DS-2019, Authorization letter from J-1 sponsor
J-2 Spouse/child of J-1 eligible to apply for and obtain work authorization to work for employer of choice. Authorization is given in one year increments.
