Environmental Health & Safety

Training

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires that all employees be properly trained as to the health hazards and safety risks in their environment. It is with this in mind that TSRI offers safety training in a variety of fields. Basic orientation and safety training are required for all employees and an annual refresher is required throughout the individual's employment.

Various other safety training programs are available through the EH&S department. Some can be completed on-line however others involve attending an appropriate class. A schedule of our classroom based trainings can be found here.

We also have an extensive library of safety related videos covering a wide range of topics which can be checked out by anyone wishing more information. For your convenience, we hope to eventually have web-based training for all situations where it is practical to do so.

EH&S is available to provide laboratory or department-specific training to your group. Contact the Safety Coordinator assigned to your area to arrange for group training. For further questions please contact the main office at x4-8240.

Biosafety Training Courses

In consort with the Institutional Biosafety Committee, web-based biosafety training is now available in the following topics.

Microbiological Hazard Training
Bloodborne Pathogen Training

Radiation Safety Orientation

Prior to working with radioactive materials, all persons must attend the Radiation Safety Training Orientation. The course is presented on the first and third Monday of each month in the Molecular Biology Committee Lecture Hall. The course is from 1-3pm and there is a mandatory test. Pre-registration is not required.

Note: If an institutionally recognized holiday falls on the first or third Monday of the month, the effected course will be cancelled; please plan accordingly.

X-Ray Machine Training

Prior to working with X-Ray producing machinery, all persons must complete the specific training course offered by the EH&S department. This training is available online or by request. Please contact us at 4-8240 if you have any questions.

Annual Refresher Safety Training

One mechanism to fulfill the annual refresher training requirement is by contacting the Safety Coordinator assigned to your area to arrange lab specific training.

Laboratories are allowed to conduct their own safety training as long as they cover all required information. The EH&S sign-in sheet must be used for documentation purposes. A copy of this sign-in sheet must be forwarded to the EH&S office upon completion of training. These required topics can be found in the TSRI Safety Standards and sample Powerpoint slides will be available on this site soon. For other alternatives contact the EH&S office at x4-8240.

It is anticipated that specific refresher training for Administrative Assistants will be offered on a quarterly basis on or about the second Monday in the months of February, May, August, and November. Announcements will be emailed when finalized dates and times are determined.

EH&S Calendar of Events [Training Schedule]

Note: If an institutionally recognized holiday falls on the first or third Monday of the month, the effected course will be cancelled; please plan accordingly.
