Radiation Safety

The Institutional Radiation Safety Committee has the responsibility to oversee the use of radioactive materials and radiation-producing equipment. The goal of the Radiation Safety Program is to assure that all radiation exposures are maintained As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA). Additionally, the Radiation Safety Program is designed and implemented to facilitate compliance with all applicable regulations. A principal investigator must apply to and be granted authorization by the Institutional Radiation Safety Committee prior to possession and use of radioactive material. As the committee meets on a quarterly basis (generally, March, June, September, and December), it is necessary to anticipate your needs and submit your application well in advance. Once approved, the principal investigator is issued a Radiation Use Authorization (RUA) which specifies authorized isotopes and activities, authorized use locations, authorized users of radioactive materials as well as other required practices and procedures. Prior to being authorized to use radioactive materials under the terms of an RUA, each individual must attend and pass the Radiation Safety Training course. Amendments to existing RUAs can generally be processed and approved within a week. Certain requests will require review by the Radiation Safety Committee, as such, approval may take significantly longer.

State of California

California is an "agreement" state and as such is responsible for promulgating and enforcing radiation control regulations. At the present time the California Radiation Control Regulations (Title 17 California Code of Regulations) are not available "on-line." If you would like to review Title 17 contact EH&S at 4-8240. Title 17 is similar to 10 CFR Parts 19 and 20 and in many instances Title 17 directly references sections of Parts 19 and 20.

Radiation Safety Applications and Forms

Please fill out the following forms as needed and submit them to EH&S via campus mail at TPC-27.

Radiation Use Authorization (RUA) Application

If a PI wishes to use radioactive materials and does not currently have authorization.

RUA Amendment Form

To amend an existing authorization.

RUA Amendment Form to Administer Radioactive Materials to Animals

A special request to use radioactive materials in animal research.

Radiation Producing Machine Registration and Amendment Form

If a PI wishes to start using or amend the use of a pre-existing radiation producing machine.

Dosimetry Evaluation Form

All employees wishing to use radioactive materials must submit this form. A determination will be made as to the need for dosimetry.

Dosimetry Change of Status Form

To reevaluate the need for dosimetry.

Radioisotope Inventory/Survey Record

Sample forms that can be used to document inventory and survey records.
