Environmental Health & Safety
Chemical Safety
TSRI is made up of over 150 major laboratories campus-wide. In
order to support the high level of research performed here, there
are hundreds of chemicals that are safely received, stored, used
and disposed every month. Regulatory requirements and good chemical
management practices stipulate that TSRI maintain a written Chemical
Hygiene Plan, identify Chemical Hygiene Officers, and control our
inventory of hazardous materials.
Our written Chemical Hygiene
Plan describes procedures to ensure safe receipt, usage, and
disposal of hazardous chemicals. The Chemical
Inventory Program accounts for the hazardous materials upon
receipt and within the laboratories. Our Chemical Hygiene Officers
consist of our EH&S Industrial Hygiene
Manager for the campus and one of our experienced Safety
Coordinators specifically dedicated to the Department of Chemistry.
The chemical safety elements described above have been established
as a means to identify and control chemical hazards, reduce the
likelihood of unsafe conditions, and provide useful information
to the laboratory staff.
Chemical-specific hygiene plans [standard operating procedures
for uniquely hazardous chemicals] are prepared for selected carcinogens,
some highly toxic substances, and reproductive toxins to assure
that our scientists are aware of the latest engineering controls
and personal protective equipment requirements for handling highly
hazardous materials.
Specific operating procedures
for some chemicals can be found here.
All employers are required to supply training to employees concerning
the hazards that they might find in their work environment. Although
this takes place to some degree at new-hire orientation, at annual
refresher training, and throughout your day-to-day work here at TSRI,
a description of the communication of hazards is attached here for
your access.
The local Fire Department has asked us to use the National Fire Protection
Agency Safety Diamond as a primary means of displaying hazards in
the work area. Therefore, you will now see this warning sign on most
doors, cabinets, refrigerators, and in any other place where a potential
chemical hazard exists. In order for this warning system to work,
you need to know how to read the Safety Diamond. Details can be found
here.

Industrial Hygiene Surveys
Industrial hygiene is the art
and science of measuring, abating, and controlling chemical exposures.
The EH&S department is equipped and capable of performing various
industrial hygiene studies including but not limited to indoor air
quality measurements, excessive sound levels in the workplace, and
confined space permitting. Please check out this
page for details concerning what workplace evaluations can be
performed to help ensure that you are working in a healthy environment.
