Personal Protective Equipment

Although engineering controls, such as fume hoods, are the primary barrier for protection from hazardous materials exposure, they alone cannot ensure total protection from chemical exposures. Therefore, TSRI has made an effort to ensure that appropriate personal protective equipment in the form of gloves, lab coats, safety glasses, respirators, etc. are available to all of our employees. TSRI's laboratory attire policy can be found here.

While appropriate gloves, common safety glasses, dust masks, and lab coats are provided by the laboratories themselves, some items, such as respirators and prescription safety glasses, require additional intervention on the part of EH&S to ensure that the appropriate equipment is provided.

Additional information concerning any type of personal protective equipment can be obtained by contacting your Safety Coordinator or the main EH&S office.

Prescription Safety Glasses

Our newest program to address the PPE needs of TSRI personnel is the Prescription Safety Glasses Program. Since there have been numerous complaints about the effectiveness and comfort of wearing regular safety glasses in conjunction with prescription glasses we, along with the help of US Safety and Fisher Safety, have implemented a system for obtaining safety glasses with a prescription built into the lenses. Details for obtaining these hybrid glasses can be found here.

For more information, please contact the main EH&S office (4-8240) or send your questions to David Hinton.

Respiratory Protection

The TSRI EH&S respiratory protection program is currently in operation. For most employees, fume hoods are the primary inhalation protection. However, there are occasions when these mechanical controls are not possible. In such cases, respiratory protection may be the best way to protect you from inhaling hazardous materials. Before you use any respiratory protection, from dust masks to self contained breathing apparatus, contact our department. You may not need any additional involvement from our office but let us help ensure that you are wearing equipment that is safe and effective for the contaminants in your work environment.
