Neuroscience research at TSRI is not centralized into any particular entity, and strong neuroscience laboratories can be found in nearly every department in the Institute. In 2008 a confederation of TSRI neuroscience laboratories was recognized as the Program In Neurosciences (http://www.scripps.edu/research/nsp/) with the goal of promoting interaction and collaboration between these groups. In support of this Program, the neuroscience affinity group organizes a lecture series that hosts leading senior investigators in the broad area of neuroscience with topics ranging from basic cellular function to clinical neuroscience and psychiatry. Important aspects of this series include one-on-one meetings between visiting speakers and TSRI faculty and the gathering of neuroscientists from throughout the Institute for scientific discussion and debate. Postdoctoral fellows and students benefit from frequent “working lunches” with visiting speakers that provide not only scientific discussion but also various perspectives on career development and advancement strategies.
Any member of the TSRI Faculty can nominate speakers for the neuroscience seminar series. Nominations should include a brief description of the prospective speaker and their scientific accomplishments, and each nomination will be considered during formal meetings of the affinity group organizing committee. Acceptance into the series is determined by committee vote. Speaker nominations and requests to meet with upcoming speakers should be sent to Floriska Chizer (fchizer@scripps.edu).
Unless otherwise stated seminars are presented at 4pm on Wednesday afternoons in The Committee Lecture Hall of the Molecular Biology Building at TSRI. These presentations are free and open to all in the San Diego scientific community including our colleagues from UCSD, The Salk Institute for Biological Studies, The Sanford|Burnham Institute and the Genomics Institute of the Novartis Research Foundation.
