Research Focus

The focus of our group is to develop a completely automated system for molecular microscopy using cryoEM. It is our goal to automate all processes from EM grid insertion to calculating the final 3D map. Over the past several years, we have developed a system, called Leginon, to automatically acquire cryo-electron micrographs. The system is designed to emulate all of the decisions and actions of a highly trained microscopist in collecting data from a vitreous ice specimen. Technologies within the group that form the basis for this system include instrument control and development, robotics, and automated image processing, analysis and reconstruction. The group includes engineers and computer scientists.
