Research Focus

The cycle of discovery in total synthesis is a dynamic process involving the coupling of imagination with the challenges offered by novel molecular complexity. The lessons acquired during the course of a total synthesis almost always transcend the process itself and lead to new insights and discoveries in organic chemistry. Our research program enters this cycle by identifying challenging and reoccurring structural motifs found in natural products. The hallmark of our approach is to examine problems in organic chemistry which have remained unsolved challenges for decades.

Another integral part of our research program is to develop new synthetic chemistry of broad utility. Just as total synthesis strives to gain wisdom from stimulating chemical architectures, we are developing methods using innovative and under-explored chemical entities.

The end result of such endeavors, aside from a clearer understanding of organic chemistry, is the discovery and development of new synthetic tools and access to potential pharmaceutical leads which inevitably will contribute to the fields of biology and medicine in many ways.
