Research Focus
Potassium Channel Function in Neurons
Research in our laboratory aims to define the molecular pathways through which potassium channels regulate neuronal signaling. We use a variety of approaches including electrophysiology, biochemistry, mouse genetics and chemical genomics to explore the neurophysiology of sub-threshold and delayed rectifier potassium channels. These channels are critical determinants of neuronal responsiveness and firing patterns, yet there are still large gaps in our understanding of how the molecular diversity of potassium channel genes corresponds to the physiological diversity of potassium currents in neurons. A secondary interest of the laboratory involves exploring the molecular mechanisms of phototransduction. This research focuses on defining the native signal transduction cascade through which the atypical vertebrate opsin melanopsin transmits information on illumination to the circadian system.
