Microsoft Operating System Updates (Patches)

You must use Internet Explorer (version 5 or later) in order to run the update scan.

1. On the IE menu bar, click Tools>Windows Update as shown below.



You will see a message similar to Checking for the Latest Version of the Windows Update Software then a graphic similar to the one below.

2. Click on Scan for Updates to the right of the green arrow.

You will see a graphic similar to the one below that will show a percentage amount of the scan, and when it's done it will show 100% complete similar to the graphic below.

You will then see a screen similar to the graphic below.

3. Click to highlight Critical Updates and Service Packs in the left column. Then click Review and Install Updates to the right of the green arrow.

Each update, in this example there are 5, will be listed with a brief description, a link to a more detailed description and an opportunity to Remove that update. Do not remove any critical updates. You will see a screen that looks similar to the graphic below.

4. Click Install Now.

5. You may see a traditional Accept/Don't Accept dialog box. Click Accept.

Once you click Accept you will a see download progress box, first showing the Download progress, then the Install progress.

Note: Depending on the number of patches, the operating system and the age of the machine, the download might be relatively quick, but the install can take 40 minutes or so. You may also be prompted to Restart your computer.

Once the install is complete you should see a screen similar to the one below.
