Welcome to the TSRI Macintosh software Reference page. Some of the links here are to the TSRI Macintosh FTP site. We will try to keep the latest versions of the freeware and shareware TSRI recommends for use. Other links are to sites off of the TSRI campus. These will take you to sites rich in software resources for the Macintosh computer.

Download the latest recommended version of the software IT Services distributes for your use. Please note: Many of the utilities/programs are Freeware. That means that there is no charge for the use of these programs. However, some of the software here is Shareware. That means, if you use it, you should pay for it.

Netscape
Netscape Navigator is a World Wide Web (www) browser. The www is a way to transmit text, graphics, sounds, movies, etc. over the Internet. Even Scripps has a home page (www.scripps.edu) with pointers to many informational sources.
  • Netscape 7.02 for pre-OS X is the recommended version of Netscape for computers running OS 8 through OS 9
  • There are several versions of Communicator:
  • Communicator 4.01-68K for the older 68K Macintoshes with system 7.5 or newer,
  • Communicator 4.01-PowerPC for PowerPCs with system 7.5.x,
  • Communicator 4.78 for PowerPCs with system 7.6.1 or newer.
  • Communicator 4.77 WITHOUT AOL Instant Messenger. For PowerPCs with system 7.6.1 or newer.

    • Eudora
  • Commercial and sponsor versions are available from Qualcomm's Eudora download site.
  • Note: Eudora is no longer supported by Qualcomm.

    • Telnet
    NCSA Telnet is a terminal emulator used for communicating with UNIX servers such as Hermes and Fuji.
  • Telnet 2.6 NCSA has an online users guide.
  • BetterTelnet 2.6
  • Nifty Telnet SSH A free secure shell client for Macintosh. It supports ssh1. If you are outside the TSRI firewall you cannot telnet in but you can ssh in.

    • Newsreader
    Usenet News are discussion groups that traverse the entire world. Groups are as diverse as "Bionet.Immunology" to "Alt.Alien.Visitors".
  • NewsWatcher 2.0b22 was a popular favorite.

    • FTP
    File Transfer Protocol is the way to move entire files from/to your Mac, to/from the rest of the Internet.
  • Click here to download the newest Fetch. It is free for educational use.
  • Fetch 3.0.3 is available from our server. Fetch is free for educational use only.

    • Other Applications
  • Click here to get the latest free Acrobat Reader to read and print Adobe Acrobat PDF (.pdf) formatted documents. The full version of Acrobat Pro can be purchased from us. The full version is required to create PDFs.
  • Stuffit Expander is a decompression utility. It will decode a number of encoding/compression formats, including .sit .bin .hqx and .zip
  • uuundo1.0 is for decoding uuencoded files. UULite2.0 is for both encoding and decoding in the uu format.

  • Be sure to update your Office in the order listed for your respective version of office. Also, you should disable your antivirus protection and quit all open applications. The OS9 update is not recommended if you do not have OS9.
