Mac OSX Issues

There are too many issues with OSX for us to compile a complete list of problems and solutions. We recommend several websites to help you in your search for solutions.
Apple Support MacFixIt Version Tracker

Some issues that are common or unique to the TSRI environment are listed below:

Issues that effect all versions of OS 10 (Mac OSX)
There are issues with filesharing to older macs. The solution is to upgrade the older macs to OS9 that are trying to share to an OSX computer.
Many printers have trouble communicating with OSX. GIMP is a possible solution. Gimp is included with OS 10.3. It can also be downloaded for free. Also, newer printer descriptions often fix the problems.

Cellquest does not run properly in Classic. Tree Star's FlowJo may be a better solution. I recommend consulting with the flow cytometry lab as they keep up to date with the latest developments

Safari does not work with Webmail. Internet Explorer and Netscape work fine with Webmail.

A Major security advisory was released on November 26, 2003 that effects all OSX machines. Click here for more details.

CHEETAH OS 10.0
OS 10.0 has too many issues. This OS is NOT recommended.

PUMA OS 10.1
OS 10.1 is much better than OS 10.0, but OS 10.1 still has more problems and slower performance than the later versions of OSX. We highly recommend upgrading to 10.3.

JAGUAR OS 10.2
OS 10.2 is an excellent operating system, but because most of the bugs are now out of 10.3, with the release of 10.3.3, we now recommend 10.3 as the prefered Mac OS.

PANTHER OS 10.3
Panther offers many new features and performance improvements, but it also has some major issues that you should be aware of if you use firewire drives. The site, "Troubleshooting Mac OS X 10.3", at MacFixIt covers many issues, including the problem with firewire that can result in data loss. If the link to that webpage is broken just do a search for OS 10.3 at MacFixIt.

Eudora 6 and 6.01 have a bug that affects attaching attachments. When you go to attach a document the "Attach" button remains greyed out. The solution is to double click on the intended attachment from with the attachment window, or to just drag and drop the intended attachment into the email message.

Appletalk Filesharing may not be functioning properly when the System is first installed. The solution is to make sure that AppleTalk is turned on in two places. Turn it on in the "Network" System Preference and turn it on in the "Directory Access" Utility. (note that the 10.3.3 upgrade addresses this issue and changes the settings so that Appletalk is on in the Directory Access Utility)
