Scripps Research Opens Doors in
Heart Disease Research
Before there can be new cures...
Before there can be new treatments...
We must do the research.
Heart Disease:
Every 37 seconds a person in the U.S. dies from heart disease.
Nearly 81 million adults suffer from cardiovascular diseases in the U.S.
Almost 6 million hospitalizations each year are due to cardiovascular disease.
With no known cures, our scientists are dedicated to
opening new doors through basic biomedical research.
As one of the world's largest, private nonprofit biomedical research facilities, Scripps Research is opening new doors for the discovery of cures for heart disease.
Please join our efforts to find a cure for heart disease.
Heart Disease Advances at Scripps Research
Treatment Found For Two Heart Ailments
Researchers have found a way to treat life threatening heart ailments like familial amyloid cardiomyopathy and senile systemic amyloidosis. The discovery of new therapeutics may also be used for other conditions, including Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease.
Ozone in Our Bodies Linked to Increasing Risk
Scientists at Scripps Research have found that human bodies produce ozone, which in turn could increase the risk of heart disease. Researchers theorize that ozone produced by the body breaks cholesterol down to produce toxic compounds in the blood. This finding could lead to preventive medicine for heart attacks.
Blood Flow Beneath a Microscope
Scientists have found hope for the creation of a new drug for heart disease through studying formation of blood clots. Researchers are examining the main causes for the clotting of veins and arteries, and are laying the groundwork for more efficient therapeutic processes.
New Approaches To Atherosclerosis
Atherosclerosis is characterized by a hardening of the arteries over time due to the build-up of plaque. A group of scientists at Scripps Research have found that a certain protein exacerbates the disease via chronic inflammation, a discovery which may lead to new drug development.
About Scripps Research
Scripps Research is one of the world's largest, private nonprofit biomedical research facilities. Our scientists include three Nobel Laureates, 19 members of the National Academy of Sciences, 270 faculty and scientific staff, 700 postdoctoral fellows, and 1,500 technical and support personnel. Our level of biomedical investigation is magnifying the likelihood of discovering new treatments and cures for diseases such as heart disease.
Over two million people have already benefited from medicine initially researched, developed, and tested at Scripps Research. We are committed to our pioneering medical research – research that might one day transform heart disease into a thing of the past – but we need your help!
We at Scripps Research are proud of the way we manage our funds. We are a 501(c)3 nonprofit and we have received Charity Navigator's top four-star rating for eight straight years – a recognition of fiscal responsibility that less than 1% of charities nationwide have achieved.
