The Importance of Scripps

Janet ("Jean") R. Kellogg and her late husband W. Keith Kellogg II have made extraordinary contributions to health care, science, and education for many years.

As a result of their commitment to graduate education, Scripps Research named its graduate college the Kellogg School of Science and Technology. The Kelloggs' generous support has resulted in the recognition of the graduate program as one of the most respected in the country.

Asked why they have contributed so generously to Scripps Research, Jean replies, "Such good work is done here. I might not understand the scientific aspects totally, but I understand its importance."

The Kelloggs established a charitable remainder trust in which Jean and their beneficiaries receive fixed annual payments, with Scripps Research receiving the remainder of the assets after the trust is dissolved — a win–win for all. Plus, Jean also receives tax benefits.

In addition to her financial commitment, Jean is a past member of the Scripps Research Board of Trustees. Keith is a former trustee.

The Kelloggs' continuous support of the graduate program at Scripps Research has helped ensure excellence and innovation in American higher education. Their impact will be felt for generations.
