About Us
The mission of The Scripps Research Institute is to serve humanity
- By creating basic knowledge in the biosciences
- By applying breakthroughs in research to the advancement of medicine
- By educating and training young scientists for biomedical research and its application
Scripps Research is an international leader in the application of biomedical research to develop life-saving drug and other therapies. It is one of the world’s largest independent nonprofit biomedical research organizations, founded in California in 1961 and expanded into Florida in 2004.
Facilities
Scripps Research in California is located in 1 million square feet of laboratory space in 15 buildings on Torrey Pines Mesa, in the heart of one of the country’s leading biotechnology centers, in La Jolla, a part of the City of San Diego.
Scripps Research in Florida has temporary quarters at Florida Atlantic University in Jupiter, while a permanent campus of 350,000 square feet in three buildings on 100 acres provided by Palm Beach County is completed.
Areas of Research
Since its founding in 1961, The Scripps Research Institute has become internationally recognized for research in these areas:
- Autoimmune diseases
- Cancer
- Cardiovascular disorders
- Cell biology
- Chemistry
- Immunology
- Molecular biology
- Neuropharmacology and neurosciences
Research in these fields continues to benefit the clinical prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases including stroke and heart disease, cancer, neurodegenerative diseases of aging, infectious diseases, alcoholism and chemical dependency, diabetes and other metabolic disorders, autoimmune diseases, kidney dysfunction, and neurological and psychiatric disorders, including autism and schizophrenia.
In Florida, work includes the following:
- Biomedical research
- Advanced technologies
- Drug discovery
Research applied to clinical diagnostics and therapeutics in areas such as infectious diseases – using the most advanced computers, robotics, and chemical screening – distinguishes Scripps Research in Florida from other academic institutions, providing faster commercialization of scientific discoveries, more rapid delivery of patient benefits, and a new model of biomedical research for the future.
Major Scientific Achievements

Faculty and Staff
Under the leadership of its president, Richard A. Lerner, M.D., the Scripps Research staff of 3,000 includes:
- 1,200 scientists, among them three Nobel Laureates and
- 17 members of the National Academy of Sciences
- 11 members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences
- 18 Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science
- six members of the National Institute of Medicine
Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Training
Currently, Scripps Research employs 800 postdoctoral research associates and enrolls over 200 doctoral students in the Kellogg School of Science and Technology graduate program, ranked #2 in organic chemistry, #6 in chemistry, and #7 in biological sciences by U.S. News and World Report. Selected students participate in an historic joint Ph.D.-D.Phil. degree program with Oxford University, the first such collaboration in Oxford’s 800-year history.
Governance
Scripps Research is governed by a Board of Trustees comprised of business and philanthropic leaders from throughout the United States. Its advisory Board of Scientific Governors is an international Who’s-Who of biomedical research and includes 11 Nobel Laureates.
Budget
The Institute’s $360 million operating budget includes federal funding, financial incentives from the State of Florida, licensing fees and investment income, grants from health-related research and support organizations, and gifts from private foundations, corporations, and individuals.
Public Programs
The Institute provides year-round lectures and symposia by Scripps Research faculty and other scientists, annual science fairs and ongoing outreach programs for public and private schools, summer science internships for high school students and teachers in California and Florida, and an international biotechnology conference in Florida.
