Welcome to the Kellogg School
of Science and Technology's Graduate Program. The scope of the program
does not easily fit into a simple description but rather has been
designed to meet the needs of students who are interested in addressing
complex biological problems using an integrated approach. While
some students focus on the structure of proteins at atomic resolution
using crystallography, electron microscopy or NMR, others might
utilize molecular genetics, biochemistry or synthetic chemistry,
to unravel complex biological questions. We encourage students to
identify important contemporary issues in the biological sciences,
and then use any means appropriate and available to approach their
studies. These approaches might include molecular biology, biophysics,
chemistry, spectroscopy, or any number of disciplines that are represented
at Scripps. We fully expect that students will choose to work in
more than one of these disciplines in the course of their studies,
and the strength of the program lies in its ability to accommodate
a multiplicity of areas of research to accomplish individual student
goals.
Please take a few moments to investigate some of the many laboratories
that participate in the Graduate Program at the Kellogg School.
Scientists here include biochemists, spectroscopists, cell biologists,
immunologists, virologists, synthetic chemists, geneticists and
other disciplines in virtually every aspect of modern biology. Students
are free to choose among any of these labs or combinations thereof,
for their research environments. Another unique attribute of the
program is its size, with more faculty than students, allowing us
to work with students on an individual basis to specifically tailor
thesis projects to meet their interests and needs. I believe that
you will find the atmosphere at Scripps uniquely enriching from
an academic as well as quality of life perspective. We look forward
to seeing you at the Kellogg School at Scripps in the near future.
Sincerely,
Stephen Mayfield

Welcome to the Kellogg School of Science and Technology Graduate Program at Scripps Florida. We are building a world-class institute on our Florida campus with state of the art facilities and research programs that span the full range of disciplines that comprise the biomedical sciences—cancer biology, cell biology, immunology, neurobiology, infectology, biochemistry, organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, and bioinformatics to name just a few.
Graduate students in the Scripps-Florida program will have the opportunity to select a research mentor from among a group of outstanding faculty, who were recruited to Scripps Florida from leading research institutions nationally and internationally. Importantly, the integration of the academic research activities at Scripps Florida with our in-house drug discovery and advanced technology programs will provide a unique environment for our students to identify cutting edge problems for study, and to emerge as sophisticated Ph. D. scientists with a unique perspective on the interplay of the biological and chemical sciences on the translation of academic discoveries to the public sector. The research environment that we are establishing at Scripps Florida is unmatched by any institution in the world.
Please take this opportunity to read about the research interests of our faculty—I am certain that you will be attracted to many of our exciting research programs. I also encourage you to submit an application to join the outstanding Ph. D. program that we are building at Scripps Florida!
