Education and Community Outreach

TSRI's multi-faceted Educational Outreach Programs represent a cornerstone in the institute's commitment to train the next generation of scientists and perpetuate scientific knowledge. In these programs, the institute provides high school students, middle and high school science teachers, and undergraduates with opportunities to pursue further education and explore careers in the life sciences.

Each spring, TSRI offers Spring Enrichment Tutorials for high school juniors and seniors, and the Science Partnership Scholars Program for middle and high school science teachers. Both programs consist of a series of weekly classes developed and taught by a cadre of TSRI graduate students with participation from senior faculty. Participants conduct hands-on experiments that can be used in the classroom and hear presentations on state-of-the-art research topics and techniques.

High school students who complete the Spring Enrichment Tutorials then participate in the eight-week Summer Research Internship Program, where they become part of a TSRI lab teamÜassisting with projects, attending lectures, and researching relevant literature. In addition, they attend weekly program activities, and are paired with a graduate student mentor who can provide assistance with the college application process. Each summer intern reports on his or her work in a written paper and a presentation at the final ceremony attended by families, mentors, and members of the educational community. Local teachers and undergraduates nationwide also have the opportunity participate in the summer internship program.

Rounding out the TSRI outreach initiative are two annual, one-day symposia: "Contemporary Issues in Bioscience," offered to 125 community teachers in the fall, and the "X-Sci" science festival, which brings 350 local high school students and their teachers to the institute in early spring. Both programs combine scientific presentations with small group lab tours in order to promote and improve science literacy, expose participants to the myriad research activities on campus, and raise awareness of the exciting opportunities available to scientists today.

While individuals of all ethnic and cultural groups are accepted into TSRI's Educational Outreach Programs, a special emphasis is placed on identifying and recruiting students who are historically underrepresented in the sciences and teachers who work in schools with a culturally diverse student population. These programs are funded by educational grants and the generosity of private foundations and contributors.
