Some of the most perilous challenges that the world faces today are in sustainability and climate change. The current processes for the production of energy, fuels and materials, which are essential to modern life, are overly wasteful and pollute our planet more than necessary. It is imperative that we move to cleaner, less expensive, and more sustainable technologies as we transition to a future not based on fossil fuels.

At the core of these challenges is the chemistry of five molecules:

  • Natural gas (CH4)
  • Carbon dioxide (CO2)
  • Nitrogen (N2)
  • Water (H2O)
  • Oxygen (O2)

These five molecules supply most of humanity's energy needs and materials as well as our generated emissions.

Surprisingly, in spite of over 100 years of scientific study, the chemistry of these seemingly simple molecules are still not well understood. Realizing and capturing their full potential still remains among the greatest challenges in chemistry today.

Our mission

The mission of the Scripps Energy & Materials Center (SEMC) is to address these challenges with new chemistry that will lead to next generation technologies for energy and materials.

SEMC is bringing together the world's brightest scientific minds in a collaborative and dyanmic atmosphere at the world-class research facilities at Scripps Florida.
