Tom Maimone Honored with Roche Award of Excellence
Thomas Maimone, a Ph.D. candidate in the Kellogg School of Science and Technology who is working in the Baran lab, has been honored with the Roche Excellence in Chemistry Award for research accomplishments in the field of organic chemistry. As an award winner, Mainome was one of 12 students participating in Roche's recent Annual Chemistry Symposium in Palo Alto, where he presented a research project, as well as hearing Roche scientists' overviews of the drug discovery process, faculty award winners' plenary lectures, and case histories in medicinal and process chemistry. Currently, Maimone's research is directed toward the total synthesis of the diterpenoid vinigrol.


BIOCOM Education Committee Wins Partnership Award
The BIOCOM Education Committee, which Scripps Research joined in 2006, has won the San Diego Science Alliance's 2008 Partnership Award in recognition of the partnerships the committee created to serve students and teachers in San Diego County. The committee was formally presented with the honor at an annual awards ceremony hosted by Amylin Pharmaceuticals in May.

BIOCOM Education Committee programs include the Life Sciences Summer Institute, as well as an annual Career Counselor Day designed to increase awareness of the San Diego life sciences cluster among school guidance counselors. In addition to Marisela Chevez, who represents Scripps Research, the committee is composed of representatives from BIOCOM, Biogen Idec, Burnham Institute for Medical Research, Salk Institute for Biological Studies, the San Diego Workforce Partnership, the San Diego County Office of Education, the San Diego Community College District, Pfizer, Dow Chemical, and other local companies.


Endeavor Magazine Wins Top Honor
Scripps Research's Endeavor magazine has won the top honor from the 2008 Communicator Awards, an international awards competition judged and overseen by the International Academy of the Visual Arts. The competition honors creative excellence by communications professionals; the Award of Excellence is given to entrants "whose ability to communicate puts them among the best in the field."

nanoscape

The Scripps Research Olson lab image titled "Nanoscape: A battle in the bloodstream between molecules of the immune system and a viral invader" is hanging in an exhibition at the San Diego International Airport, Terminal 2, from June to December 2008. The exhibit, sponsored by the professional association BIOCOM, features art from San Diego life science research institutions and companies.
