Wanted: Talent

By Mika Ono

One of a scientific organization's most important resources is its talent. The high quality of research at The Scripps Research Institute would not be possible without a cross-section of outstanding employees—from scientific and administrative staff to members of support services such as Facilities, Procurement, Sponsored Programs, and Research Computing.

To attract more talent from the local community, the Scripps Research Human Resources Department will host a job fair on the La Jolla campus on Wednesday, May 25, from 10 AM to 2 PM in the Beckman Center galleria.

"We want people to come and see what Scripps Research has to offer as an employer," says Khanh Nguyen of Human Resources, who is organizing the event. "The career fair is an invitation to visit campus, ask questions of current employees, and take a tour of one of our labs."

A resume and career workshop is another draw for career fair participants. In the workshop, Scripps Research Human Resources personnel will offer tips on improving interviewing and resume writing skills.

The career fair on the La Jolla campus will make up one component of the Scripps Research Human Resources Department’s larger outreach efforts. Scripps Research representatives routinely attend job fairs across San Diego county, at universities, community colleges, and public venues such as Balboa Park. Efforts in the state of Florida to recruit top-notch employees for the Palm Beach County campus are also ongoing.

The May event will be the La Jolla campus's third career fair. Previous fairs drew several hundred participants.

This year, the Human Resources group plans to set up 20 tables to be staffed by current employees and it is now actively recruiting volunteers.

"We need people from all departments and labs," says Nguyen. "You can volunteer for one hour or for the whole event. Many people find it rewarding to talk with job seekers—and there’s free pizza for all volunteers.”

For more information on the job fair, see the Career Fair web page. Those interested in volunteering should contact Nguyen at x4-8662 or email knguyen@scripps.edu.
