In Brief

Koob Wins NIAAA's Keller Award
Professor George Koob, director of the Division of Psychopharmacology of the Department of Neuropharmacology and co-director of the Pearson Center for Alcoholism and Addiction Research, both at The Scripps Research Institute, has won the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism's Mark Keller Award. This award is given annually to "an outstanding alcohol researcher who has made significant and long-term contributions to our understanding of how alcohol affects the body and mind, how we can prevent and treat alcohol abuse and alcoholism, and how today's scientific advancements can provide hope for tomorrow."

At Scripps Research, Koob leads efforts that focus on neuropharmacologic mechanisms and how these mechanisms are altered with the development of central nervous system abnormalities, including alcoholism, addiction, stress, viral injury, and genetic variability.

Koob will deliver a lecture entitled "The Neurobiology of Alcoholism: Dysregulation of the Brain Reward and Stress System" on Tuesday, November 9, on the National Institutes of Health campus in Maryland as part of the award presentation.
