Two Schematic Views of Tolerance with a Generated B-Cell Repertoire of 20 Cells

Under clonal selection (top), cells in the generated B cell repertoire that are autoreactive are eliminated before they can pass into the periphery. Under receptor editing (bottom), autoreactive B cells have a chance to avoid selection by rearranging their receptors. Some rearrange, are no longer autoreactive, and survive (14', 16', 20'). Others, such as #11, are still autoreactive and are eliminated.
