Ly6C expression divides helper T cells. Ly6C levels on CD4 helper T cell when they leave the thymus (Left two panels) and in the periphery (right two panels). Half of the helper T cell compartment increases Ly6C expression in the periphery before any encounter with antigen. Once activated by foreign antigen, the Ly6C high subset uniquely helps B cells to produce antibody.
