Schematic representation of a mouse-yeast hybrid 18S rRNA. Yeast expressing the hybrid rRNA were used to demonstrate an mRNA-rRNA base-pairing interaction between a mouse translational enhancer element from the Gtx-homeodomain mRNA and a complementary sequence contained within the 18S rRNA of 40S ribosomal subunits. This work was performed by John Dresios, Stephen Chappell, and Wei Zhou in the laboratory of Vincent P. Mauro, Ph.D. The mouse 18S rRNA is depicted as a black line, and the yeast rRNA is indicated as a white line. The hybrid rRNA contains both mouse and yeast sequences and is depicted as a black-and-white line. The secondary structures were adapted from those obtained on the Comparative RNA Web Site (http://www.rna.icmb.utexas.edu/) of Robin Gutell, Ph.D., University of Texas.
