The Skaggs Institute For Chemical Biology Scientific Report 1999-2000
On the front cover: Vancomycin is a clinically indispensable antibiotic and is the drug of last resort for treatment of multidrug-resistant infections. Bacterial resistance to vancomycin is now emerging. The chemical structure depicted here is a vancomycin dimer that is potent against vancomycin-resistant bacteria. The molecule was designed and synthesized in the laboratories of K.C. Nicolaou and Dale Boger, members of the Skaggs Institute. Work continues on vanomycin in these 2 laboratories and in other laboratories at TSRI (see Nicolaou et al., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 39:3823, 2000).
