Current research projects

The Kurt Wüthrich Group is affiliated with the Department of Molecular Biology and the Department of Chemistry at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California. The current activities include all aspects of NMR spectroscopy and structural interpretation of NMR data, and a molecular biology/biochemistry laboratory for functional studies of proteins and for the preparation of isotope-labeled proteins for NMR studies. A first focus of our research is on the use of NMR within the framework of the Joint Center for Structural Genomics (JCSG), the JCSG Center for Innovative Membrane Protein Technologies (JCIMPT) and the Functional and Structural Proteomics Analysis of SARS-CoV-related Proteins (FSPS) Consortium. As part of these protein structure initiatives, we develop and apply NMR methods for the screening of recombinant protein preparations for folded globular domains. In conjunction with these projects, a specialty of our laboratory is to explore the use of microcoil NMR equipment combined with microexpression of proteins. NMR structure determination of selected proteins from the proteomes under study is another important aspect of our activities in the structural genomics programs. A second research focus are investigations relating to the protein folding problem. These include structural characterization of polypetide chains in denaturing solution milieus, and studies on chaperone-mediated folding pathways of globular proteins.
