Local public libraries include those at state universities (UCSD and SDSU), community colleges, San Diego City and County Library branches, and the San Diego County Law Library.

However, as a tax-supported institution, UCSD Libraries are open to the public and provide limited services on-site to walk-in users.
Scripps employees may choose to join the Friends of the UCSD Libraries, a public program, in order to obtain enhanced library privileges for an annual membership fee.

Is there full access to the Internet in the Library?
Yes, there is full access to the Internet available in the Library from the six computer workstations as well as a wireless network. However, Internet access is provided for Library research use. There is no access to the Scripps Health Intranet or patient records, etc.

Services Answers

Will you photocopy articles for me?
Library staffing levels are set to provide unique Library services that do not duplicate services that may be provided by administrative support staff in individual deparments. Green Hospital Adminstration expects departments and laboratories to provide their own general administrative support for activities involving use of the Library, including photocopying and re-shelving.

If you need to send a technician or student, a Library staff member can give them a brief orientation on how to locate and copy articles. If you are off-site, then photocopies can be made for you (if you work part-time at another site and part-time at Torrey Pines, then please arrange to make your copies while on-site). Submission of more than ten requests at once may take several days to process.

Why does the Library ask us to shelve our own journals?
Returning journals to the shelves immediately after use provides timely accessibility to Library resources. Library staff activities are focused on providing unique library services. Administration has set Library staffing levels to provide library services while keeping shared administrative services costs low. Departments and laboratories are expected to provide their own general administrative support for activities involving use of the library, including photocopying and re-shelving.

I just need to verify a citation. Can you help me find the (author, pages, article titles, etc.)?
Library staff can help you verify citations, so please do not order ILLs/interlibrary loans just for verification purposes. Citation verification can be done much more quickly and inexpensively by other methods; simply ask a Library staff member for assistance. For example, PubMed has a Single Citation Matcher that will help identify citations indexed in Medline

Top of page

Why is a citation listed in PubMed or on the journal's website when the article has yet to be published?
In the era of electronic publishing, many publishers provide database producers with tables of contents and additional information such as abstracts prior to the actual printing of the journal issues. As a result, databases now often list citations of papers that are still "in press" and are not yet available as full-text articles. A journal's own web site may also provide early publication information.
