Your help matters

Through this website we have introduced you to our research program, which is aimed at studying the ubiquitin-proteasome system as a way to understand normal cellular function and provide new tools to fight disease. We described our work on MULAN, an enzyme implicated in a signaling pathway which cancer cells often use to evade stress. We presented our exciting new discoveries on Listerin, which are uncovering how neurons die in diseases like Parkinsonism and Alzheimer’s. We referred to our efforts aimed at discovering drugs that inhibit Mdm2, an enzyme that belongs to the same family as MULAN and Listerin and is overproduced in nearly 10% of all cancers.

The impact of the work carried out by our team of scientists would not be as significant without the help of other scientist and clinician collaborators. We are also indebted to patients who choose to contribute their DNA, tissue and other samples for study. Last but not least, our work has only been made possible because of financial support from the National Institutes of Health and the American Cancer Society. Now you can also get involved.

We are uniquely positioned to make significant therapeutic discoveries

Obtaining research funds is very difficult these days. Your support is important to help the next generation of scientists that have the potential to come up with new effective disease therapies to achieve their scientific and translational goals.

Before joining Scripps in 2006, the Joazeiro laboratory was associated with the Genomics Institute of Novartis. In that Industry setting, we developed experience in the process of Pharmaceutical drug discovery. Together with the team’s expertise in the ubiquitin system and the scientific and entrepreneurial environment at Scripps and in the San Diego area as a whole, we are uniquely positioned to turn the results of our research into new therapies for cancer and neurodegenerative diseases.
