Duties & Responsibilities: Scripps Florida Biomedical Science is seeking a candidate for Post-Doctoral Fellow. This position will be part of a research group developing HIV therapeutics and vaccines. Responsibilities will include development of (I) peptide synthesis (II) ligation chemistry and (III) characterization of proteins. This position is available immediately.

INFORMATICS

Within the department of Informatics, the following Postdoctoral positions are available:

Duties & Responsibilities: Scripps Florida is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral researcher interested in fungal genomics to work on the annotation and analysis of genome sequence data of Chrysosporium lucknowense C1. The genome sequencing project on this fungus has been completed and a full scale annotation project has begun to identify and describe the genes of this commercially important fungal species.

The Postdoctoral fellow will be responsible for the interpretation of the sequence data, mining and curation of resultant data, as well as preparing gene expression profiles that are incorporated into databases. He/she will prepare data for utilization by other scientists within defined timeframes and will be expected to present data at weekly and scientific meetings.

The successful candidate will be located in the Informatics Division at Scripps Florida (Jupiter, Florida) and will be expected to collaborate with scientists from Dyadic International, Inc.

Requirements: Qualified candidates should have a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology/ Microbial Genetics or Computational Biology. Familiarity with scripting languages is required. Preference will be given to candidates with extensive knowledge and experience in fungal biochemistry, physiology, and genetics. The position is initially for 2 years with the possibility of extension. Starting day is negotiable. CELL BIOLOGY

Duties & Responsibilities: A postdoctoral position is available to study regulation of the fibrinolytic system and its role in neurological function. The fibrinolytic system uses plasmin to degrade blood clots and also to generate protease activity for cell migration. Thrombotic diseases are the leading cause of death in the United States. The success candidate will study the function of cellular plasminigen receptors and the role of the plasminogen system in neurological functions.

Requirements: A Ph.D. in either biology, chemistry, biochemistry or neurobiology.

DRUG DISCOVERY

Duties & Responsibilities: Will be responsible for developing novel biochemical and cell-based functional high-throughput screening (HTS) assays for drug discovery. Perform molecular biology techniques, including subcloning and generation of expression vectors to create stable mammalian cell lines. Perform protein labeling, expression, purification. Perform optimization of biochemical and cell-based assays. Operate and troubleshoot automated liquid handling and analytical equipment. Utilize a variety of spreadsheet and data management software systems to generate, analyze and report data from research efforts.

Requirements: Ph.D. in Biology, Chemistry, or Engineering Sciences. Background in and experience with enzyme kinetics, protein expression/purification, mammalian cell culture expression vectors and cloning. Proficiency with operation of common laboratory and analytical equipment. It will focus on breast cancer stem cells with an emphasis on the elucidation of novel molecular markers, biological characteristics of such cells and validation of their therapeutic relavance for breast cancer.

Duties & Responsibilities: The Kono lab is seeking qualified individuals to participate in studies related to the molecular genetics of systemic autoimmunity in spontaneous mouse models. The program includes: 1) Genome-wide studies to identify predisposing genes in these models. 2) Creation of cogenic and subcogenic strains of mice to assess the role of candidate genes in the pathogenesis of component phenotypes. 3) Development of gene knockouts on predisposed background to address the role of cytokines, cell cycle and other immunologically-relevant genes. 4) Assessment of T cell homeostasic disturbances.

Duties & Responsibilities: Research Associate/Postdoctor positions available in our lab, which studies Rho GTPases, how they are regulated, and how they control various cell activities (see TSRI website for Bokoch lab). We are currently particularly interested in cell motility, cytokineses, formation of reactive oxygen species via NADPH oxidases (Nox's) leukocyte function and how anthrax toxins might modulate innate immune responses. We seek motivated researchers with an interest in training in these subject areas.

Duties & Responsibilities: A Postdoctoral training position is available for a highly motivated and creative individual to work on a research project. It will focus on co-expression of chemokines and cytokines by oral DNA-based vaccines targeting transcription factor Fos-related antigen 1 (Fra-1) and their ability in priming and boosting T cell-mediated immune responses to eradicate spontaneous pulmonary metastases of breast carcinoma and prevent their recurrence.

Duties & Responsibilities: Several postdoctoral positions are available at The Scripps Research Institute. Our lab studies the 4th Mammalian MAP kinase, BMK1/ERK5, signaling pathway and the tumor suppressor/protein chaperone, Tid1/Hsp40, how they are regulated, how they control diverse cellular responses and how they participate in cancer progression in animals (see Nature 1998;395:713, JCI 2004; 113:1138, Cancer Research 2005; 65:7699 and Nature Medicine 2006; 12:128). We seek motivated researchers with an interest in training in these subject areas.

The studies will focus on elucidation of GTPase-regulated signaling pathways resulting in changes in airway remodeling and pro-inflammatory processes.

Duties & Responsibilities: A postdoctoral position is available immediately using x-ray crystallography to understand the pathogenesis and immune evasion strategies of Ebola virus and other emerging/reemerging infectious diseases. Projects in the laboratory include viral envelope glycoproteins and components of the viral nucleocapsid. Strong collaborations with virologists, immunologists, and P4 facilities are in place for application of structural data to biological questions.

Duties & Responsibilities: Helen Dorris Fellowship: A Postdoctoral position at the Harold L. Dorris Neurological Research Institute is available at The Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla.

Molecular Neurobiologist start date after October 1, 2006.

This fellowship is generously donated by Ms. Helen Dorris, a local philanthropist, and covers NIH level salary and benefits for 2 years. The previous fellows have gone on to promising academic careers.

The successful candidate will work within a research group on the receptor-ligand interactions and on intracellular signaling of the neuropeptide galanin (involved in Major Dpression, Schizophrenia, cognition and seizure control) or of the proinflammatory cytokine Interleukin 1. We study both transcription dependent and transcription independent signaling mechanisms, and routinely use DNA chipping to examine transcriptional changes and subsequently follow up expression of gene products in various functional, physiological and behavioral tests. The work will employ biochemical, molecular biological (mutagensis, polymorphisms, and transgenics) and cell biological techniques, and acute and chronic methods of neuropharmacology and immunopharmacology, and will be supported by ongoing work in the laboratory by electrophysiologists, morphologists, and behvaioral scientists.

The unique opportunity arises from the close collaboration within the same lab of all of these disciplines required for a deep understanding of any neurobiological problem. Our seminars and progress reports typically feature a collaboration between two or more disciplines.
