TSRI Graduate Overview


Benefits for TSRI Graduate Students begin at the commencement of classes and terminate at the end of the month in which you graduate or cessation of the program by the student. Coverage is available for a spouse, domestic partner, and/or children for a nominal extra cost.

The chart below outlines the main provisions of the medical plan for TSRI Graduate Students. The Principal Life Insurance Company administers the plan. The provider network is Community Care Network (CCN).

Day Care: The Gluck Child Care Center provides service to the children and families of the Scripps medical and scientific community. The Center is available to children from two months of age to five years.

*Dependent Care Spending Account: TSRI Graduate Students may set aside up to $5,000 pre-tax, annually, to use for dependent care expenses.

Direct Deposit: TSRI offers Graduate Students the opportunity to have their paychecks deposited directly to a banking institution of their choice.

Discount Coupons: Available to many local attractions such as Sea World, the San Diego Zoo, the Wild Animal Park, Disney club membership, etc.

Employee Assistance Program: A counseling or referral program is available to health insurance-eligible Graduate Students and their spouses, domestic partners and family members who require assistance in dealing with personal or family problems.

Fitness Benefit: TSRI Graduate Students are eligible to become members at the Shiley Health and Fitness Center, UCSD's RIMAC Center or 24 Hour Fitness. Contact the Graduate Office for more information.

*Golden State ScholarShare College Savings Trust: A voluntary savings program designed to help California families meet the increasing costs of higher education. The program is managed by TIAA/CREF Tuition Financing, Inc. This benefit is available to all Graduate Students paid by TSRI and regularly scheduled to work a minimum of 20 hours per week.

Life Insurance, Supplemental: Benefit-eligible Graduate Students may purchase supplementary life insurance coverage from a minimum of $10,000 up to a maximum of $500,000 for self and/or spouse. Eligible dependent children may be covered to a maximum of $10,000 each.

Mental Health Benefits: Graduate Students and dependents covered by the medical plan may participate in the mental health program administered by United Behavioral Health (UBH). Participants may have up to 40 outpatient visits per year. Outpatient visits to a in-network provider requires no co-payment per session and does require pre-authorization. Outpatient visits to a non-network provider require a 50% co-payment. Inpatient services include psychiatric and chemical dependency psychiatric treatment.

Prescription Drug Plan: Graduate Students and dependents covered by the medical plan may obtain generic prescriptions for $10.00 or name brand prescriptions for $20.00. Mail order prescriptions are also available.

*Tax-Sheltered Annuity Plan (TSA): A voluntary savings program that allows employees to make pre-tax contributions to various mutual funds and insurance company annuities.

*Transit Benefit Account: The Transit Benefit Account (TBA) allows you to deduct money for eligible transportation expenses on a pre-tax basis. This allows you to save money on Federal and State income taxes, by reducing your taxable income.

Vision Plan: Graduate Students and dependents covered by the medical plan participate in the vision plan administered by Medical Eye Services (MES). By choosing a participating vision provider, a Graduate Student may receive an annual vision exam for a copayment of $10, one pair of standard lenses in every 12 months, frames costing up to $110 every 24 months or one pair of contacts costing up to $100 every 12 months. Benefits are reduced when a non-participating provider is used.

Wellness Benefits: On-site, seated massage is available to Graduate Students on a biweekly basis. Additionally, Graduate Students may participate in yoga, tai-chi and weight watchers at work programs.



  * These benefits are available to TSRI Graduate Students who receive taxed pay through TSRI (Division 3).
