| Paid Personal Leave (PPL): Regular full-time and part-time benefit eligible employees (regularly scheduled for 20 or more hours per week) begin accruing PPL and ESL from date of hire. Scientific Staff, Research Associates and Graduate Students are ineligible for the PPL/ESL program. |
Extended Sick Leave (ESL): ESL hours may be used from the first day of an absence if the absence is due to the employee's or family member's injury or illness that results in immediate hospitalization, outpatient surgery, or chronic illness. Examples of chronic illness include diabetes, asthma, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, multiple sclerosis, etc. A supervisor may request a doctor's certification for all uses of PPL/ESL for illness including time off to care for a family member. A doctor's certification is required to document the use of ESL for a chronic condition. Further information can be found in the PPL/ESL Administrative Guideline. |
| Earning PPL and ESL: The amount of PPL and ESL earned depends on the employee’s status, length of service (PPL only), and the paid hours in each pay period. PPL and ESL are earned according to the following schedule: |
