Lab Opportunities

We are currently accepting applications from highly motivated young scientists interested in exploring the molecular mechanisms underlying actin dynamics in cellular architecture and tissue morphogenesis. We have projects in striated muscle, red blood cells and the eye lens, as well as cultured epithelial cells. The postdoctoral fellows and students who join our group will have the opportunity to learn and master a variety of modern approaches in cell biology, including immunofluorescence confocal microscopy, 3D renderings and quantitative image analysis, time-lapse imaging of fluorescent-tagged proteins in living cells, mouse genetics and cell physiology, and cutting-edge techniques in electron microscopy. Molecular mechanisms are investigated using actin polymerization and protein-protein interaction assays, subcellular fractionation and western blotting, proteomics, and RNA-expression profiling, as well as over-expression and shRNA-knockdown approaches in cultured cells.

The Fowler laboratory is located in the CIMBio building (http://cimbio.scripps.edu/) containing diverse groups engaged in multidisciplinary studies of molecular machines using electron and light microscopy, chemistry, crystallography, and computational approaches. The Fowler lab is working with the National Resource for Automated Electron Microscopy (http://nramm.scripps.edu/) to develop correlative light and electron microscopy technologies to study cytoskeleton structure and cellular architecture. TSRI also has cutting-edge resources in combinatorial chemistry, microarray technology, genomics, proteomics, and mouse genetics. For information about other faculty research interests, facilities and environment at TSRI, see the web site: http://www.scripps.edu.

To apply:

Postdoctoral Fellows:

Interested candidates should send an email directly to Velia Fowler with a brief statement of previous accomplishments and future research and career goals, curriculum vitae, and one or two publications. Successful candidates shall not have received the Ph.D. degree more than three years ago and shall have published at least two strong papers in major English journals. A strong postdoctoral training program is in place, which includes lab group meetings, journal clubs, departmental seminars and inter-laboratory focus group meetings. Fellows are mentored in the Fowler lab to develop successful fellowship and grant applications and to facilitate career development, based upon the specific interests and goals of the fellow. Fellows can also take advantage of the resources in the Career and Postdoctoral Services Office at TSRI: http://www.scripps.edu/services/postdocs/.

Graduate students:

If you are considering graduate school, contact the Kellogg School of Science and Technology http://education.scripps.edu/. If you are already in the graduate program, email Velia Fowler to discuss rotation projects in the Fowler lab.

Undergraduates and High School Students:

Openings are occasionally available for part-time lab helper/internship positions during the year, or during the summer for research internships. Send resume and cover letter to Velia Fowler.
