Providing state-of-the-art scientific infrastructure. Thanks to unrestricted support, Scripps Research maintains an array of extraordinary technologies, providing ever-shorter paths from discovery to application in the treatment of a large number of diseases. 

Focusing on neglected diseases.  Unrestricted giving provides scientists with the freedom to pursue discoveries in disease areas that are too small to attract the attention of commercial entities, but are devastating to patients and their families. 

Funding “out of the box” research.  Unrestricted giving provides funds for ideas that are so original that there is no previous track record for the National Institutes of Health to evaluate them—precisely the type of research that can lead to scientific breakthroughs. 

Supporting young scientists.  Unrestricted giving provides a jump start to promising young scientists emerging from the shadow of a mentor, or even an established scientist moving into a new area.  These scientists typically have a difficult time getting funding from conventional sources, which tend to favor well-established researchers.

Allowing graduate students to follow their dreams.  Scripps Research provides full support from institutional funds to every graduate student for the first year.  In subsequent years, students are supported by individual laboratories.  Unrestricted giving allows the students to choose a laboratory in which to carry out their research without being influenced by a source of funding, creating an environment in which learning can be tailored to individual interests and capabilities.
