The Scripps Florida Kenan Fellows Summer Internship for Undergraduates is an intensive 10-week program designed for returning Kenan Fellows who previously participated in the program as a high school student. The program provides a highly interdisciplinary mentored research experience at the interface of chemistry and biology.
The program will broadly explore (1) chemical reactivity and diversity as tools to probe biochemical structure and function, and (2) the connection of molecular and cellular structure with complex organismal phenomena such as aging, metabolism, learning and memory.
In addition to the research experience, weekly seminars by faculty will introduce the participants to current endeavors at Scripps Florida. Seminars with Scripps graduate students and postdoctoral fellows will explore issues such as choosing a graduate school and mentor, graduate school applications, graduate student life, and career paths in science. At the culmination of the program, participants produce a research poster and present their work in an Institute-wide poster competition. The program also provides a number of social activities to foster interaction among students, their mentors, and members of TSRI's research community (e.g. baseball games at Roger Dean Stadium, beach picnics, Everglades air boat tours).
Students who previously participated in the Scripps Florida Kenan Fellows program as a high school junior or senior, are now enrolled at an undergraduate institution and who have successfully completed at least two years of baccalaureate education are eligible.
Applicants must be either a United States citizen or a permanent resident of the United States or its possessions, and at least 18 years of age as of June 10, 2013.
Participants will receive a $4,000 stipend for the 10-week program based on a standard 40-hour work week. Housing is provided on the adjacent Florida Atlantic University campus (5-min walk from Scripps Florida).
Applications are due by February 15, 2013. Five participants will be chosen annually based on letters of recommendation and passion for scientific discovery as described in a written statement. Applicants will be notified by email on or before March 1.
