Graduate students on the Scripps Florida campus have the opportunity to select a research mentor from among a group of outstanding faculty, recruited to Scripps Florida from leading research institutions nationally and internationally.  Much of the work at Scripps Florida is dedicated to basic biomedical research, as well as the development of advanced technologies which can be applied to the discovery of new therapeutic agents for a variety of devastating human diseases.

Currently, five biomedical academic departments of The Scripps Research Institute are headquartered on the Scripps Florida campus.  They are:

  • Cancer Biology – research on the molecular pathogenesis of cancer with special interests in breast, lung, ovarian, prostate, multiple myeloma, leukemia, lymphoma and melanoma, as well as the interplay between cancer and the immune system, and the relationships between aging and cancer
  • Infectology – research on the structure of the toxic prion protein, the life cycle events involved in the replication of HCV, and the identification of host genes and proteins that are critical for HIV replication
  • Metabolism & Aging - research in metabolism, aging, neuroscience, and neuroendocrinology that contributes to an understanding of alterations in whole-body metabolism, metabolic diseases, and the physiological changes that lead to physical and cognitive decline during aging
  • Molecular Therapeutics – research using chemical biology approaches to dissect signaling pathways and transcriptional programs in a wide range of therapeutic areas such as glaucoma, Parkinson's disease, diabetes, obesity, addiction, and cancer
  • Neuroscience – research on understanding the mechanisms underlying learning, memory, sleep, consciousness and the human diseases that affect these cognitive processes; as well as the identification of molecules that underlie the etiology of Alzheimer's disease, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia.

Chemistry research on the Florida campus includes natural products chemistry, chemical biology, medicinal chemistry, chemical synthesis, and energy chemistry.  The Department is headquartered on the California campus.

In addition, Scripps Florida is home to the Translational Research Institute that combines Drug Discovery with Advanced Technologies to discover and develop novel therapeutic agents for unmet medical needs.
