K-12 Student and Teacher Programs
The mission of the Scripps Florida Education and Outreach Program is to promote bioscience education and awareness throughout the state of Florida by advocating career opportunities in the biosciences for middle and high school students and undergraduates, assisting middle and high school teachers with bioscience education initiatives and, for the public in general, fostering an understanding of the basic ties that exist between biomedical research and human health. Our program is supported by a generous gift from the William R. Kenan, Jr. Charitable Trust.
Scripps Florida has established the following Educational Outreach programs:
- The "Introduction to Science" lecture and hands-on exercise are designed to teach a middle school class about our world, what it's made of and how it works. It is a chemistry-based lesson but demonstrates the fundamental ties among the four basic sciences (math, chemistry, physics and biology). This lecture is typically 45-60 minutes long and will be performed at the requesting school by one or two Scripps Florida scientists. On-line request below.
- The "Science Saturday" course is designed to show Sophomore and Junior level high school students (30 maximum) about the everyday tools of biotechnology scientists through a hands-on DNA forensics exercise. High school students will process DNA and utilize standard laboratory techniques to solve a "crime." "Science Saturday" students will work at Scripps Florida campus for 3-4 hours on a designated Saturday. On-line request below.
- Including: The "Scripps Florida Biotechnology Tour" providing an up-close view of the biomedical technologies used in the battle against human diseases at Scripps Florida.
- The "Summer Research Internship Program for Teachers" at Scripps Florida has been created to expose teachers to current laboratory techniques and procedures, provide information on a variety of contemporary issues in basic biomedical research, create ties and linkages to working scientists who can assist them in curriculum development, and create opportunities for teachers to share information and knowledge with their peers. Teachers will conduct basic biomedical research in a laboratory under the supervision of a Scripps Research scientist. The program emphasizes the scientific process, research planning, bench experience, experimental design, data analysis and interaction with laboratory personnel. As an adjunct to their day-to-day responsibilities, participants will be required to attend specially-designed seminars throughout the course of the summer. In addition to the intensive, hands-on six-week summer program, teachers are expected to use the laboratory experience as a springboard to create opportunities in discovery-based learning for their students, effect change in their classrooms and serve as a resource for other educators. - The Scripps Florida "High School Student Summer Internship Program" has been created to expose students to a variety of contemporary issues in basic biomedical research, provide hands-on laboratory experience, and to motivate and prepare students for continuing education in the sciences. In addition, it is committed to increasing the number of students underrepresented in the sciences who pursue undergraduate and graduate programs in the biological and chemical sciences. Students will conduct basic biomedical research in a laboratory under the supervision of a Scripps Florida scientist. The program emphasizes the scientific process, research planning, bench experience, experimental design, data analysis and interaction with laboratory personnel. As an adjunct to their day-to-day responsibilities, participants will be required to attend specially-designed seminars throughout the course of the summer. - As one of the country's leading biomedical research institutions, The Scripps Research Institute has made a commitment to the science education community to use its intellectual and material resources to expose high school students and middle/high school science teachers to contemporary issues in biomedical research, to provide intensive, hands-on laboratory experiences, and to encourage students to pursue scholarship and careers in the biological and chemical sciences.
Please fill out the online form and press the submit button at the end of the form. Unfortunately, due to the high level of interest, the Scripps Florida Educational Outreach Program may not be able to fulfill all requests. Requests will be evaluated based on a variety of criteria, including availability, timing, and site location.
