Scripps Florida High School Student
Summer Internship Program

June 14 - July 23, 2010
Application period: January 1 - March 5, 2010

Program Description

The Scripps Florida High School Student Summer Internship Program, funded by a generous grant from the William R. Kenan, Jr. Charitable Trust, has been created to expose students to a variety of contemporary issues in basic biomedical research, provide hands-on laboratory experience, and to motivate and prepare students for continuing education in the sciences. In addition, it is committed to increasing the number of students underrepresented in the sciences who pursue undergraduate and graduate programs in the biological and chemical sciences.

The Scripps Research Institute is one of the nation's largest private, not-for-profit biomedical research institutions, with an international reputation in the areas of immunology, molecular biology, chemistry, cell biology, autoimmune disease, cancer, cardiovascular diseases and the neurosciences. In addition to its longstanding commitment to the training of postdoctoral fellows, the Institute has a graduate program leading to the conferral of doctoral degrees in the chemical and biological sciences.

Students will conduct basic biomedical research in a laboratory under the supervision of a Scripps Florida scientist.  The program emphasizes the scientific process, research planning, bench experience, experimental design, data analysis and interaction with laboratory personnel.  As an adjunct to their day-to-day responsibilities, participants will be required to attend specially-designed seminars throughout the course of the summer.

Eligibility / Compensation

Research Internships are awarded on a competitive basis to United States citizens or permanent residents who will begin their junior or senior years in a Palm Beach County high school in the Fall of 2010. All applicants must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0. Students must be 16 years of age or older. While students of all ethnic and cultural groups are accepted into the program, a special emphasis is placed on identifying and recruiting students who are historically underrepresented in the sciences (i.e., African American, Hispanic, Native Pacific Islander, or Native American students).

Students are awarded a gross compensation of $8.00 per hour for the six-week summer program.
