Careers in Science
Welcome to the TSRI - Florida Career Day Videos
The physical sciences — physics, chemistry, electronics — changed every aspect of our life for the better during the 20th century. Transportation was advanced by the invention of automobiles and airplanes. The communications industry made huge strides with the development of the television, telephone and cell phone. In the way of conveniences, refrigerators, air conditioners, microwave ovens, and computers changed the way we live.
In this century, the biosciences will bring dramatic improvements in both the quality and span of human life. New medicines with fewer or no side effects will be developed to treat diseases, vaccines and other preventative measures will reduce the incidence of serious disease, and new screening technologies will aid physicians in prescribing health care programs for their patients. Bio-agriculture is developing natural pesticides and improving crops’ inherent resistance to disease. Developments in hydro- and aeroponics are leading to new growing environments and greater crop yield. Bioscience research will also contribute to the development of renewable energy sources and a cleaner environment.
Who will lead us into this new century of advances in bioscience? Careers in biosciences in the coming decade will grow at a rate 13.1 percent faster and the median salary will average $20,000 higher than jobs in other industries. We encourage you to take a look at these career videos, which talk about jobs in biomedical research, just one field in the biosciences, from the perspective of the people who work in this industry.
