Chemistry

The Scripps Research Department of Chemistry is a bi-coastal department, with strong representation on the Scripps Florida campus. As the central science, chemistry stands between biology and medicine and provides the crucial bridge for drug discovery and development. But chemistry plays a much more useful role in science and society. It is the discipline that continually creates the myriad of new materials which we encounter in our everyday lives: pharmaceuticals, high tech materials, polymers and plastics, fabrics and cosmetics and vitamins – basically everything we can touch, feel and smell.

Chemistry at Scripps Florida focuses on chemical synthesis, natural products chemistry, chemical biology and medicinal chemistry, the areas of chemical research most relevant to biomedical research. Research efforts have also been initiated at Scripps Florida on carbon-hydrogen activation, such as the conversion of methane to methanol, which has important implications in energy research.

Numerous collaborations have been established between Scripps Florida chemists, Scripps Research's biological departments and the Translational Research Institute to advance basic biomedical research and more focused drug discovery efforts. Working with colleagues in lead identification, discovery biology, drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics, Scripps Florida scientists with expertise in medicinal chemistry are focused on a variety of disease areas, including cancer, glaucoma, Parkinson's disease and a variety of parasitic diseases.
