X-Sci 2006 Speaker
Gabe Lander
Gabe Lander is a third-year graduate student at the Scripps Research Institute,
where he is studying virus structures through the use of cryo-electron microscopy.
He received his B.S. in Biochemistry from the State University of New York
at Binghamton in 2002, after which he moved to Stanford and worked as a genome
curator at the Arabidopsis Genome Project. A year later he moved to San Diego,
where he began working at Scripps with Professor Jack Johnson until his enrollment
as a graduate student in 2004).
A joint grad student of both Jack Johnson and Bridget Carragher, Gabe's work
focuses on both the biological study of virus structures, as well as working
towards the complete automation of cryo-electron microscopy. By improving the
technological aspects of data collection, Gabe has facilitated biologists with
the ability to test hypotheses at a much higher rate than in the past. Gabe's
work with the virus "Bacteriophage P22" was recently featured on
the cover of Science magazine.
