Sources and Resources: GFP

GFP - Green Fluorescent Protein - has spawned a quiet revolution in cell biology by providing any experimentalist with the ability to label a protein of interest and introduce it into cells using routine methods of molecular biology. A number of resources for work with GFP are provided here.

Books
Green Fluorescent Proteins Vol 58, 1998. Kevin F. Sullivan and Steve A. Kay, eds. Academic Press, San Diego. From the successful Methods in Cell Biology series, this volume provides a comprehensive treatment of the approaches and techniques used for Green Fluorescent Proteins (GFP). The volume covers all aspects of GFP, from its expression in different organisms to specific microscopic and data analysis methods
Green Fluorescent Protein : Properties, Applications, and Protocols 1998. Martin Chalfie and Steven Kain, eds John Wiley and Sons. This book, edited by the workers who first demonstrated the fluorescent properties of recombinant GFP, provides a series of essays from the GFP pioneers covering the theory and practice of GFP as applied in numerous systems.

Vendors
Clontech Laboratories has vigorously developed a very broad array of GFP-based tools for cell biologists, including expression vectors, antibodies, fusion protein constructs and a steady stream of useful GFP derivatives for multicolor biofluorescence applications.
