Industry Bridge Program

Our Mission
This program is designed to provide opportunities for TSRI postdocs and graduate students to learn about industry careers by visiting biotech, pharmaceutical and medical device companies. As part of the experience, postdocs will have the opportunity to obtain industry exposure, interact with industry scientists and learn how to prepare for the transition from academia to industry.

The company visit
Company visits will vary depending on the companies’ needs and can last from a few hours to all day. A typical visit will consist of a facilities tour, presentations by the company employees (research, company mission, etc) and a networking lunch for the attendees to get a chance to talk with the industry scientists in small groups. The industry bridge program does not provide one-on-one meetings. The purpose of this program is not to lead you to a job offer; it is for you to get an inside look at life as an industry scientist.

Selection of participants is on a first-come first-serve basis.  On average we expect 10-20 participants per visit. Upcoming visit dates will be announced by email and posted to this site.

  1. Must be a full-time Research Associate or ≥ 4th year graduate student at The Scripps Research Institute.
  2. Preference will be given to applicants who have not previously participated in an SoF IBP visit.
  3. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
  4. Cancellation within 72 hours of the event will count as attending the visit and affect future IBP visits!

Future visits will be announced in the coming months via email.

If you have company suggestions, or if you would like to help organize a visit, please contact us.

How are intellectual property rights protected of all parties involved?
A Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) will be signed between the company and TSRI.  Participants will be required to review intellectual property materials (TSRI intranet only) provided by the TSRI Office of Technology Development prior to the visit.

How many post-docs will be participating per visit?
This is up to the company to decide. There is a strong interest in industry careers on the TSRI campus, and we anticipate many researchers will want to participate.

Can you describe in detail what you expect during a visit?
The companies are welcome to structure the visit as they see fit.  Here is an example schedule:

10am: arrival and brief orientation
10:30am: campus tour
11am: company speaker: “Product X: from conception to market”
12pm: lunch/roundtable interactions with employees
12:45pm: panel discussion or speaker: “Navigating to a career in industry”
1:30pm: closing remarks and Q and A

Does my PI need to be notified?
Since the program requires up to a day outside of the lab, and the potential for scientific exchange, we strongly recommend you disclose and discuss the visit with your PI.

Will transportation be provided?
Depending on the company, you will either drive yourself or a shuttle will bring you to and from TSRI campus and the company.

Do I bring a lunch or can I buy one on site?
Once the company visit agenda is finalized, you will be informed of the details of your visit.

What if my PI has questions about this program that I can not answer?
Your PI may contact Ryan Wheeler ( to address any concerns he/she may have.
