The TSRI Society of
Fellows is organizing our annual ski trip to Big Bear Mountain
Resorts for Saturday, February 9th, 2013. The Big Bear
Mountain Resorts are the largest ski resorts in the San Bernardino
Mountains near Big Bear Lake, about a 2.5-3hr drive from TSRI. They
include the Bear Mountain and Snow Summit Resorts and the same lift
ticket can be used at either location throughout the day.
All
TSRI personnel and one guest each are invited to join in on the
fun.
Tickets have sold out.
Instructions for Saturday
To check the snow conditions- http://www.snowsummit.com/ski/snow-report/current-snow-report/
It's snowing in the mountains today. We need to leave promptly from TSRI and from Big Bear in case of delays caused by the snow.
Please take the time to read the following information on what will happen during the day, and also relay this to your guests, if they are not on the mailing list.
Since we have already purchased the tickets from Snow Summit, we cannot refund any money for cancellations. If you are unable to attend, let me know and I will try to offer your spot to someone on our waiting list or feel free to try and sell your spot using the classifieds listserv.
What to wear:
Please dress appropriately for the weather. It will be cold, and might snow. Everyone should bring waterproof clothing for skiing/snowboarding and appropriate shoes to wear when walking to and from the bus, i.e. no flip flops. I would also suggest waterproof gloves, a warm hat, sunglasses and sunscreen for everyone as well. I would be a good idea to bring a change of clothes as well for the bus ride home.
In the morning:
Arrive by 5am at the flame of knowledge, the area between the immunology building and parking lot 4. The parking lot on the roof of the Immunology building should be open and okay to park at during the day.
Before you can enter the busses, you have to pick up your lift ticket. This can be a bit of a lengthy process, since there are close to 100 participants, but we will try and make it as smooth as possible. The tickets will be distributed by SoF EC members, who will be standing by the muffin and beverage area, outside of the Immunology building. The tickets are arranged by alphabetical order of the person who registered for the event. Find the person carrying your ticket, get it, grab a muffin and a juice, and hop on either of the two busses. If you are renting equipment you will also be given an equipment rental voucher form with all of your information on it, hold on to this and turn it in at the resort to receive your rental equipment.
We will be leaving Scripps at 5:30am. Don’t be late – we will not wait!
Arriving at Big Bear:
We will arrive around 9am in the morning.
For those of you who brought your own gear – you have everything and are ready to go. For those who are renting equipment: go to the appropriate rental shop (http://snowsummit.com/images/basemapb2.jpg). Unfortunately, even though you have already handed in all the equipment rental information forms, you still have to go through the equipment rental line. Please bear with this process, you will still save some time since all of your information will be printed out on your equipment rental voucher form.
Going home:
Come to the buses at 2:30pm (same place as they dropped us off in the morning).
Load your luggage and enjoy the after ski beer provided by SoF. We will leave at 3:00pm. Again, we cannot wait for anyone arriving late. Therefore, plan accordingly so that you have time to hand in the rental equipment, and get to the buses on time.
We will be back at TSRI around 7:30pm.
Lessons:
If you want to take the lesson included in the lift/rental/lesson package, be at the ski school meeting by 9:45am.
Storage:
There are lockers in the rental shops for storage of personal items. They cost $1 but require 4 quarters for one time use. There is also basket check, located at Bear Bottom (see map). The cost is around $5. You can go in and out of the basket throughout the day.
Food:
There are several nice restaurants to get lunch, and they also allow you to bring your own food if you want.
Going over to Bear Mountain:
We will arrive at Snow Summit, but our lift tickets are also valid for Bear Mountain (more focused on snowboarding/terrain parks). Shuttles go back and forth between the two mountains.
Accidents:
Hopefully no one will have an accident, but just in case, be prepared; bring your insurance info.
