About Society of Fellows

History

The SoF was founded in 1962 by Dr. Frank Dixon, who went on to become president of the institute. From its inception, the SoF hosted a distinguished lecturer series to enable junior scientists to interact with outstanding researchers in the field. The Distinguished Lecture Series remains a key mission of the SoF today.

Mission Statements

  • We are a nonprofit, all volunteer organization designed to encourage both professional and social exchange within The Scripps Research Institute, and with postdocs from other institutions in the San Diego area.
  • We establish and maintain a program of communication and information exchange regarding the Institution for all present and former postdoctoral fellows.
  • We sponsor a Distinguished Lecture Series to bring leaders in the science and technology to the TSRI La Jolla Campus.
  • We sponsor a Research Symposium each year for TSRI postdocs to share their findings with their colleagues at TSRI and compete for monetary awards.

Membership

All TSRI graduate students, staff, and current and former postdoctoral fellows are eligible to participate in SoF activities and may become part of the Executive Committee.

Executive Committee

The Executive Committee consists of volunteers elected to the capacities of President, Vice President, Treasurer, DLS Program Chair, Career Development Chair, Vendor Show Chair, Social Chair, IBP Chair, and Website Manager. A number of non-elected positions also exist within the Executive Committee, particularly as liaisons to other TSRI organizations or dedicated volunteers. All Executive Committee members, along with the officers, have voting rights in all SoF decisions.

Please Join Us! All members of the TSRI community (not just postdocs) are eligible to become members of the Executive Committee. We have regular meetings on the first Thursday of each month, from 1pm to 2pm in the Beckman conference room on the fourth floor (BCC-4). Just show up - lunch is always provided.

Why join the SoF Executive Committee?

  • Get to know other members of the TSRI community.
All SoF meetings and sponsored activities are open to all students, postdocs, and staff. Participate in the SoF to increase your personal and professional network and make new friends.

  • Help us spend your money.
The SoF has a dedicated budget for social events as well as career development programs. Help us plan an event and you get to attend for free. All ideas are welcome!

  • Invite and host a distinguished scientist in your research field.
The SoF Distinguished Lecture Series provides postdocs with unique networking opportunities with leaders in science and technology.

  • Get involved with issues that affect postdocs, both here at TSRI and nationally.
The SoF regularly participates in discussions regarding all aspects of the postdoctoral experience. We routinely send delegates to the National Postdoc Association annual meeting and other postdoc-focused events to continuously work on improving the resources and programs offered by the SoF.
