Overview

The Normal Blood Donor pool is open to all healthy individuals in the Scripps community who are readily available during working hours. Notices are published regularly in Scripps in-house publications to recruit employee/donors from under-represented minorities.

All eligible donors are screened for infectious diseases prior to enrolling in the program, as well as yearly after that. The Annual Donor Screen consists of:

  • CBC      Complete Blood Count to test for anemia
  • HBag     Hepatitis B Surface Antigen
  • HCV     Hepatitis C Antibody
  • HIV      HIV-1 Antibody Screen with Reflex to Western Blot Confirmation

The HTLV I/II Antibody by EIA test is available at an additional charge to the Principal Investigator.

Use the NBD Service to Order Blood

The process for ordering normal human blood requires that each laboratory has a protocol approved by the Scripps Human Subjects Committee (HSC) for normal blood drawing. With that in place, the procedure is web-based and simply involves specifying how much blood is required and how many donors should be involved. Appropriate charges for this service are invoiced to the laboratory as for any core service. There will also be an effort made to accommodate special needs and requests from investigators in order to facilitate the successful implementation and conduct of projects.

If you are a TSRI PI with IRB Approval to use the NBDS:

  • Have the IRB office forward the BDIF (Blood Donor Information Form) to NBD Service
  • .
  • Contact nbdinfo@scripps.edu for a login for the NBDS Website to order blood on line.

If you are a TSRI PI who needs IRB Approval to use the NBDS go to https://research.scripps.org to submit an application to the IRB.

If you are a PI from an outside company who would like to use our service, please contact nbdinfo@scripps.edu for the application forms you will need to complete to get IRB approval. The process will take about one month to complete.

Give Blood, Get Money, Help Research!
