Claudia Skaggs Luttrell

Carrying on a Family’s Legacy

Claudia Skaggs Luttrell is continuing the tradition her family established at Scripps Research by serving as the new President of the Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology. Claudia also serves on the Scripps Research Board of Trustees.

Claudia has international influence on scientific collaboration in her capacity as President of the Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology and Chair of the Oxford–Scripps Skaggs Scholars Program where she has been actively involved as a liaison in developing a joint academic training program between Scripps Research and Oxford University.

She serves on several philanthropic boards including The Alsam Foundation, where she is secretary and a member of its Grants Committee. She strongly believes in the principles established by her father, Mr. Sam Skaggs, that the pharmaceutical and biomedical sciences are critically important to bringing new medicines to people's lives more quickly and less expensively for the treatment of disease.

Claudia is a lifetime member of the Salt Lake City, Utah community where she grew up and received her education. She is a businesswoman, an accomplished equestrian who has won two U.S. National Championships and a Canadian National Title, a person involved with her local community as well as with the national and global communities. She is the founder and former CEO of Meadowlands Veterinary Hospital and has been active on a number of civic and national boards including the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, The Natural History Museum, the Salt Lake Symphony Board and the Roman Catholic Charities. She also served on the University of Utah Board of Trustees and currently serves on the National Advisory Boards of both the University of Utah and UCSD. Claudia closely follows her father's tradition by being devoted to providing education to minority children via her active participation in the building of Catholic schools that provide education to underserved communities.

In 2007, Claudia was awarded The Lawrence C. and Delores M Weaver College of Pharmacy Recognition Award, the highest award presented by the University of Utah College of Pharmacy. In 2008, she was a recipient of an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from the University of Utah.

Claudia's belief in the potential of the Skaggs Institute to advance science is demonstrated by her dedication to this remarkable research collaboration, which combines the thrill of discovery in biology with the ingenuity of innovation in chemistry.
